Manta Rays

One of the greatest advantages of home ownership at CostaBaja Resort & Marina is not only owning your own piece of real estate in Mexico, with its 340-plus days of sunshine per year and proximity to La Paz, but having the Sea of Cortez with its abundance of marine life at your doorstep. Manta rays are some of the most beautiful creatures gliding in the waters and, with a width of up to 22 feet and reaching a weight of an astounding 1,200 pounds, manta rays are the largest in the ray family and one of the five largest species of fish in the world. The largest known manta ray was approximately 30 feet across and weighed an astonishing 3,000 pounds. Manta rays are difficult to track, however, so an even larger ray could coast past you any time!

Manta rays have a long and mythical history. Once thought to be associated with the devil, sailors told folk tales of mischievous rays that capsized boats or held men in their huge wings underwater until they drowned. Though the fins at the sides of their heads do resemble devil horns, manta rays are peaceful creatures. Very few will approach divers or snorkelers; if they do, it’s out of curiosity and not aggression — keeping proper distance when diving is the best way to avoid any accidents.

When it comes to mating rituals, a male, or several males, will rapidly chase after a female for up to half an hour. Once the female becomes tired of the chase, the male will nip at her pectoral fin allowing her to be moved to the surface so mating can begin. As many as 25 different male manta rays can pursue a single female. Because the gestation period can be as long as 13 months, mating must occur quickly and as often as possible.

Manta rays produce eggs that hatch live young inside the mother’s oviduct and feed on milk until more than a year later when it is fully developed. Pups range in size from 3 to 4 feet wide and weigh around 25 pounds, however, pups double in size in their first year of life. Mothers give birth to a single pup in the shallow water where the young will stay for several years, until they reach sexual maturity and are ready to explore deeper waters.

Mantas, meaning ‘blanket’ in Spanish, cover the floor of the sea like a sheet and drift through the waters searching for food. Watching manta rays swim in Mexico is an amazing sight: their bodies move in tiny ripples and waves thanks to the gentle flapping of their fin rays, usually referred to as wings. Feeding on small fish and marine vegetation in Mexico’s Sea of Cortez, manta rays guide food by the gallons into their huge mouths by using the small fins at the sides of their head. Like dolphins and whales, manta rays will leap out of the water — sometimes a full 6 feet — and crash down to the surface, causing a massive splash, much to the delight of boaters and divers lucky enough to catch this magnificent sight.

Manta rays are highly intelligent creatures with a brain-to-body ratio similar to that of sharks. When examined closely, the manta rays’ brain reveals three areas that are predominant, representing hearing, coordination and tactile senses. Although there is no doubt they are clever creatures, these are also the three areas of the brain used specifically for finding and eating food.

These legendary sea creatures are content simply floating and swimming alone. Their eyes, either blue or green, match the turquoise hue of Mexico’s Sea of Cortez. These peaceful creatures may be alarmingly large in size, but their serene disposition and inclination to spend time alone make sighting a manta ray a truly amazing experience.

Soak up the Sun with Sea Lions

Soak up the Sun with Sea Lions

La Paz, the capital of Baja California Sur, Mexico is known for its sunny skies, sandy beaches and unparalleled marine life. Scuba divers and snorkelers from around the globe vacation here — or purchase real estate in La Paz, Mexico and the surrounding region — to be near the Sea of Cortez to take advantage of this natural wonderland. In fact, many homeowners at CostaBaja Resort & Marina are scuba and snorkeling enthusiasts and join those who awe and wonder at the neon fish, unique crustaceans and splashing dolphins, but sea lions are what garner the most praise and become the topic of conversation over a delicious seafood diner. From their distinct personalities to their cute little ears, sea lions truly are magnificent creatures.

People can easily confuse the physical appearance of sea lions and seals. While both have smooth bodies, a similar dark gray coloring and large flippers, sea lions have tiny ears on the sides of their heads. As well, they can walk using their four extremities; a seal simply slides on its belly.

Living near La Paz, Mexico means sea lions don't have to scrounge very hard for food. Small fish, squid and cephalopods are abundant in the Sea of Cortez and provide ample nourishment. Eager sea lions will hunt for an astounding 30 hours straight, with each dive lasting approximately 5 minutes. A prosperous hunting session will result in numerous fish, squid and octopus. Sea lions have a tremendous appetite and eat roughly the equivalent of one-seventh of their entire body weight per day.

Diving isn't just for dolphins, as sea lions are able to dive an amazing 1,300 feet into the water and can stay submerged for up to 15 minutes. These amphibious creatures will even sleep in the water! If a sea lion finds itself sleepy in the sea, they will have a quick nap … although they do prefer to sleep on rocks under the Mexican sun.

Often found in larger colonies, sea lions are very social creatures and are rarely found alone. The males, or bulls, are often found patrolling their patch of rock for intruders. Should a sea lion be provoked, they have very sharp teeth and are able to swim at a surprisingly quick speed in order to protect their colony. However, those of us who have snorkeled with these beautiful creatures find them gentle and have never had any cause for alarm.

Mating generally occurs in June or July — just 3 short weeks after the cow's pup from the previous year has been born. The gestation period lasts from 10 to 11 months and only yields one pup. In August, the males leave the females and swim to more northern regions. Females, with their pups, tend to stay in warmer, shallower waters. Once males are old enough to mate, they migrate south to choose a partner — although they are polygamous creatures and often have several partners during mating season. Once a sea lion is fully-grown, they reach a height of anywhere from 1.7 to 2.2 meters and will weigh between 610 and 860 pounds. Sexual maturity is reached around age 5 and their average lifespan is roughly 20 years.

One of the most defining features of a sea lion is their unique, deep barking sound. Sea lions will honk and bark at one another to communicate however, during mating season, the males bark more intensely and loudly as a means of marking their territory. Females tend to have a more high-pitched bark and generally only make noise when they feel danger looming. Juveniles, both male and female, produce a more growl-like sound and only shriek if they are searching for their mothers.

Sea lions are notorious for being rambunctious and playful — with each other as well as with snorkelers — especially the pups! Sea lions love to be able to show off for an enthusiastic audience, although direct contact is inadvisable — keep a respectful distance. When not cooling off in the crisp waters, sea lions are true sun worshippers. Huge gatherings can be found lazing on rocks enjoying a sun-soaked afternoon nap.

Learning the Language of Bottlenose Dolphins

Learning the Language of Bottlenose Dolphins

The Sea of Cortez in La Paz, Mexico is home to one-third of the world's dolphin population due to its abundance of smaller sea creatures, such as squid, crabs and fish that dolphin feed on. Renowned for their playfulness, intelligence and affection towards humans and each other, dolphins can't help but amuse snorkelers and divers with their seemingly smiling faces. There's no denying dolphins are almost magical creatures, complete with their own special language and gregarious personalities.

The sleek, gray bodies of bottlenose dolphins have a dorsal fin on their backs and two side fins to allow for rapid swimming and make them one of the most easily recognizable of all marine creatures. As well, they feature a long, beak-shaped nose for which they are named. Their real nose, however, is the blowhole on the top of their heads. Full-grown adults range anywhere from 2 to 4 meters long and weigh from 150-650 kilograms. Typically, 20% of their bodyweight is blubber to help keep dolphins warm underwater.

Living in small groups called pods, bottlenose dolphins are rarely alone in the Sea of Cortez. It is not uncommon for smaller pods to join other pods to form a large group; however, these groups are continually changing. Dolphins are natural predators and do occasionally behave aggressively. This is generally illustrated by head-butting and fighting amongst each other for rank, as well as showing aggression toward certain sharks and smaller species of dolphin. Overall, dolphins are extremely friendly creatures and have even earned the nickname "Man's best friend of the sea." There are several noted cases of dolphins rescuing injured divers by raising them to the surface of the sea.

Romance and courtship are huge factors in dolphin reproduction. Courtship practices involve males playing, nuzzling, yelping and posing for the female in order to gain consideration. Gestation lasts about a year, and the single calf is born in shallow water with the aide of a "midwife," or helper dolphin. Calves are nursed for up to a year and a half and stick very closely to their mother for the first 6 years. Dolphins are famously attached to their young and have very nurturing, almost human-like maternal instincts. Mothers typically care for their young alone; males are not involved.

Flipper, the beloved "rescue" dolphin, was featured on a long-running TV sitcom and was often helping families in need and protecting their human friends. This series sparked the notion that humans and dolphins could communicate with one another. Scientists have more than enough evidence that dolphins absolutely do have their own language. These mammals make a series of clicks, buzzes, squeaks or screeches that serve two distinct purposes: navigation and communication. Of all the animal species, only humans and dolphins possess a language so complex. To communicate with each other, dolphins generate high-pitched whistles and clicks to express alarm or sexual excitement. As well, dolphins are natural mimics and are often found imitating sounds made by their trainers.

To navigate their way underwater, find food or judge distances, dolphins use their echolocation navigation system. Simply, this means they produce a series of high-pitched sounds and are thus able to navigate by the way their sound "bounces" off an object. A dolphin can then evaluate how close or far they are from an object, and how big or small that object is. In one scientific test, a dolphin was able to locate an object approximately the size of a marble in an area the size of a football field.

As their nose lies in their blowhole which stays closed underwater, bottlenose dolphins have a very weak sense of smell. Their sharp eyesight, however, accompanies their amazing sonar ability so dolphins are able to see even in dim light, such as underwater. Dolphins' pupils perfectly adapt and allow them to easily find their way through the Sea of Cortez.

Zoos and theme parks often have dolphin entertainment as a major draw. Because of their intelligent, clever nature, dolphins easily learn to follow directions and enjoy the awe and applause they gain from delighted crowds. Dolphins in La Paz, Mexico are very similar; although there is no trainer, they are often found swimming in the water near scuba divers and snorkelers and love following the waves created by boats, much to the amusement of the lucky swimmers and boaters.

Wildflowers in Mexico

Wildflowers in Mexico

You might not expect the range of color choices available for your gardens, but there are myriad wildflowers that thrive in Mexico, even in a desert climate. Imagine flowers with yellow, red, pink, orange, white and purple blooms, turning your landscape into a beautiful floral bouquet. Personalize your home in Mexico with the sights and scents of flora that will enhance the natural beauty of your surroundings.

Add a splash of color to your Mexico home garden with:

Desert Primrose, so called because the primrose keeps its flowers close to its body, is a cousin to the Dune Evening Primrose, which prefers the same terrain, as does the lilac-colored Sand Verbena. When the three bloom together, the visual effect of the purple, yellow and white alongside the intoxicating perfume are stunning.

Western Wallflower often has a single stem arising from a basal cluster of leaves which can grow to a staggering five to forty inches long. Dense clusters of yellow flowers occur at the top of the plant, but occasionally, some flowers have an orange tint, or may be completely orange.

Desert Marigold is a common flower in the Saguaro forests of the Sonoran Desert. The Desert Marigold grows in large clumps, often as high as two feet tall! The wide flowers are a brilliant yellow, highly esteemed by drylands gardeners and many bird species alike. The name "marigold" is widely supposed to honor the Virgin Mary, although it may, in fact, derive from the Old English "mere," meaning marsh.

The Desert Five-Spot flourishes beautifully in the desert. From March through May, globes with five pink to purple petals open. Inside, the cream-colored center is highlighted by five deep purple blotches surrounding many stamens. As well, these globe-shaped flowers offer a special visual treat: when light shines through, they resemble a fragile lantern.

Chuparosa, which means "rose-sucker" in Spanish, doesn’t refer to this delicate bell-shaped flower, but to the hummingbirds attracted to its brilliant color; tubular, deep-red flowers bloom on and off throughout the year. Mexico and Central America abound with some 60 species of this beautiful plant.

Other flowers found in the Sororan Desert include, (in alphabetical order): Big Sagebrush, Brittlebush, Cave Primrose, Chia, Cliffrose, Datura (POISONOUS), Desert Chicory, Desert Dandelion, Desert Globemallow, Desert Lily, Desert Lupine, Desert Mariposa Lily, Desert Paintbrush, Desert Pincushion, Desert Sunflower, Dogbane (POISONOUS), Devil’s Claw, Dune Evening Primrose, Fairy Duster, Filaree Storksbill, Ghost Flower, Mojave Aster, Popcorn Flower, Prickly Poppies, Sand Verbena, Showy Four O'Clock, Spanish Needles, Woolly Daisy, Yellow Beeplant. ]]>

Gardening in La Paz, Mexico

Gardening in La Paz, Mexico

You may think that when you purchase a home in La Paz, Mexico that your green thumb will not be required south of the border. It may be arid country with over 340 days of sunshine per year and an average 16 days of rainfall, but owning real estate in Mexico does not mean you necessarily have to forgo your love of gardening — you just need to learn how to grow different kinds of plants. You may be pleasantly surprised to learn how many varieties of cactus and wildflowers thrive in Mexico’s Sonoran Desert.

The Sonoran
The hottest of our North American deserts, the Sonoran is an arid region covering 120,000 square miles in southwestern Arizona, southeastern California, most of Baja California Sur, and the western half of the state of Sonora, Mexico. Despite the common stereotype that it does not rain in deserts, the Sonoran Desert is considered the wettest desert in the world, receiving 3 to 15 inches per year, and it contains more than 2000 native plant species, including plants from the agave family, palm family, cactus family, legume family, and many others. The Sonoran Desert has the greatest diversity of vegetative growth of any desert worldwide! That’s a lot to build a garden with! This week, we examine the various types of cacti native to this corner of Mexico, and next week we will explore the wildflowers of the desert. You will be surprised at the variety and colors of flowers that flourish in the desert!

Cactus of Mexico
No discussion about cacti of Baja should begin with anything other than the Cardón. The cardón cactus (Pachycereus pringlei) is the world's largest cactus and is nearly endemic to the deserts of the Baja California peninsula. Some of the largest cardones have been measured at nearly 21 meters (70 feet) high and weigh up to 25 tons. These very slow growing plants are also extremely long-lived, and many specimens live well over 300 years. 'Cardo' means 'thistle' in Spanish. It is said that when Hernando Cortes attempted to establish a settlement in Baja in 1535, the many spiny cacti earned it the name 'Isla de Cardón', because at the time, they believed the peninsula was an island. In Latin, 'pachy' means thick and 'cereus' means waxy. One has only to see the thick arms of this pale gray-green, waxy skinned cactus to understand what the traveling American botanist, Cyrus Pringle, meant when he named the species.

Many first time visitors to Baja mistake this giant cactus for the ecologically similar saguaro cactus, however, while the saguaro live in the Sonoran Desert, they do not live in Baja specifically. The reverse is also true: while there are a few stands of cardón found across the Gulf of California on the Mexican mainland, they seldom occur near the saguaro. The main trunk of the cardón may have as many as 25 vertical branches, up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) in diameter. In older plants the branches are usually taller than the trunk. The cardón are especially spiny when they are smaller, to protect them from predators. As they grow older, many of the spines fall off and are not replaced.

The lower trunks of older plants turn gray, and a cracked, woody bark makes them look like the thick legs of an elephant. Woody vertical ribs allow the columnar cactus to expand and contract like an accordion, storing the water it needs to survive in the arid conditions. These cacti have developed extensive, shallow root systems which quickly capture the brief, but torrential rains of the region. A large cardón may store over a ton of water in the fleshy, pulp-like tissues of its trunk. In order to support this great weight, the large cactus has an interior framework of hardwood vertical rods, lightweight, yet extremely strong, which act to stiffen the ribs. This amazingly tough hardwood skeleton has allowed the cardón to become the largest cactus species, able to thrive in the very harsh climate of the Baja California's Sonoran Desert. From March through June, flowers appear on the upper tips of stems, especially stems with warm, southern exposure. Flowers open in the afternoon, stay open all night, then close about mid-morning the next day.

Other cactus found in the Sororon desert include (in alphabetical order), Barrel Cactus, Beavertail Cactus, Century Plant, Chain Fruit Cholla, Cholla Cactus, Claret Cup Cactus, Desert Christmas Cactus, Datil Yucca, Fishhook Cactus, Hedgehog, Mojave Yucca, Night-Blooming Cereus, Organ Pipe Cactus, Senita Cactus, Soaptree Yucca. Any of these will survive well in your Mexican garden. ]]>
